Police arrest fallen star Samuel Wanjiru's mother as she attacked relatives who had gathered for his burial arrangements
The drama surrounding the death of the late Olympic Champion Samuel Wanjirtu heightened today after the mother Mrs. Hannah Wanjiru was arrested by the police.
The mother stormed Wanjiru’s burial home at Suera estate where elders had visited to view the final resting place of the late athlete and started chaos.
During the melee, two people were seriously injured and admitted to Nyahururu Charity medical clinic after they sustained serious injuries inflicted on them by the mother.
A team of Kikuyu elders had visited the home led by Wanjiru’s grandfather Mr Samuel Kamau to decide on the final resting place for Wanjiru.
It was just after checking on the site that the mother accompanied by her sister and another man who also claimed to be Wanjiru’s boyfriend that they stormed at the home.
All over a sudden, the mother dished out a panga from her handbag and started protesting angrily shouting at the team.
She claimed that the visitors were behind the death of Wanjiru and were after concealing evidence of his death and that was why they wanted to bury Wanjiru without her consent.
She confronted her father in public accusing him of sabotage and ignorance.
“I do not recognize you in any way since you are behind the death of my son. My son is not a dog to be buried anyhowly,” she protested.
It was at this juncture that she dared to stab the father with a panga when other relatives intervened.
Njeri’s brother Mr Paul Wanjohi who intervened was hit with the back of the mother and started bleeding profusely.
He was rushed to Nyahururu Charity medical clinic and admitted.
The commotion ensued for the better part of the day when the mother again hit at another relative who also sustained serious injuries on his head and admitted to the same hospital.
During this time, Wanjiru’s wife Mrs Triza Njeri fled and took refuge to Nyandarua Institute of Science and Technology.
The mother vowed that her son would not be buried until the real cause of his death was established.
She later locked herself at the house belonging to the athlete in the company of her sister and the man who claimed to be Wanjiru’s biological father.
Efforts by the mother’s brothers to cool her down were fruitless and he did not in anyway support her insisting that Wanjiru should be given a decent burial.
Police officers who were called by the members of the public arrived some hours later only to find the mother locked up in the room with her sister and the man.
Nyandarua deputy OCPD Jacob Kanake led a contingent of police officers in arresting the mother and the duo.
They were locked at Ol Joro orok police station where they recorded statements.
By the time of going to the press, police had not given any information on any charges that she would face.
Kanake told the press that he would communicate later after investigations were through.
Police also recovered the panga that the mother was armed with.
