NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 23 – Chaos has erupted on Nairobi’s Waiyaki Way after students at the University of Nairobi took to the streets to protest the killing of their colleague at a nightclub in Westlands.
The students had been allowed to conduct a peaceful protest to the club where their colleague was assaulted leading to his death, but the demonstration turned chaotic on approaching the Museum Hill roundabout.
Motorists driving into the city centre were forced to make emergency u-turns causing accidents as they tried to avoid the approaching students.
The students stoned a number of cars and robbed motorists caught in the ensuing traffic snarl-up. Most shops in Westlands were hurriedly shut as students began looting and stoning people on sight.
They were protesting against the killing of second year engineering student Denis Omondi Adari, a week after he was assaulted.
Reports say the student was assaulted by guards at the club following a disagreement.
An obituary in the local dailies on Tuesday said a requiem mass would be held for the late Omondi at Lavington United Church this Friday.
Burial is expected to take place on Saturday at the Langata Cemetery.
