School in Crisis as 11 Pupils Fall Pregnant

Nairobi — Parents with children at a primary school in Ndhiwa District are in shock after 11 girls were confirmed to be pregnant last Friday.

The pregnant girls, who are pupils at Ndere Primary School in Kobodo Division, are between 12 and 16 years of age. Seven of the girls are in class seven, two in class eight and one each in classes five and six. The matter came to light last Friday after two of the parents frogmarched their daughters to the district children’s officer, Mr John Kabasa.

Root of the matter

The parents were accompanied by assistant chief Richard Otieno Omolo, who said he was disappointment that the parents of nine other pregnant girls had refused to report the matter. Mr Kabasa said his office and those of the district commissioner, Mr Godfrey Omoding and education boss Benjamin Mauko would get to the root of the matter.

I am happy that two of the girls revealed the names of those responsible for their pregnancies, said Mr Kabasa. Mr Mauko confirmed that 11 girls were pregnant at the school. He was, however, still puzzled as to why his office had not been notified of the matter.
