A 12-year-old Standard six girl has dropped out of school in Nandi Central district after being impregnated by a member of a school Parents Teachers Association. Police in the area are looking for the 48-year-old man who defiled the girl and went underground after learning that the pupil was pregnant.
The pupil at Kiropket Primary school in Kapsabet division said she was defiled by the parent who gave her Sh50 and promised to give her many other goodies so long as she did not tell her parents. The girl has dropped out of school after the pregnancy became noticeable.
The school head teacher Richard Bett confirmed the incident saying he has written to the district education office and informed the local administration. “The man who committed the act is a neighbour at the home of the pupil and we have informed the relevant authorities to take necessary action,” said Bett who also confirmed that the girl was no longer attending class.
Villagers in the area are demanding police action over the defilement saying the girl is underage and from a poor family. The villagers claim the man had been attempting to silence the family from reporting to the police. Child rights activists from Nandi County led by Rosebella Bett said the girl needs urgent support since she is too young for her body to bear the pregnancy.
She protested at the slow pace police had taken to act saying there were sufficient evidence to have the suspect face the law. “Police should have acted on this matter long ago because we are told the man is still loitering in the village as he tries to silence the parents of the girl,” said Bett. She said the crime committed by the PTA member should not go unpunished, and that it was unfortunate for a person holding such a position in the school to turn against a child. Police confirmed they are looking for the man.
