A popular gospel Kiswahili songs singer Mary Wambui of the Ahadi ya Bwana fame is among the three suspects held in custody in Embu over the last week faced with charges of conning several job seekers. Wambui, who has also rolled out other popular numbers like Umetukuka, Tuma Neno, and her co-accused were yesterday released on Sh250,000 cash bail for the two sets of charges they face.
Judith Irima Njiru, Josphat Ndambo Mwangi and the musician Mary Wambui Mutarura were charged before Chief magistrate Margaret Wachira that between September 5 and 6 at Kagwerori Market within Embu county and South C estate in Nairobi jointly with others not before the court and with intention to defraud they obtained between Sh12 600 and Sh20,000 from different people.
They allegedly cheated them that they will recruit them as employees in a well-paying non government organisation; East Global Community Association, a fact that they knew to be false. The magistrate had held them in custody after prosecutor Mulamula Imbwaga resisted their release until the prosecution finalised its investigations.
Imbwaga however late yesterday succumbed to their advocate Lugard Mogusu’s earnest request for their release on bond arguing that they had constitutional rights to be free on bond. For one set of the counts, the trio face 11 fraud charges and were bailed out on Sh100,000 cash bail each and another set in which they are facing seven charges, they were released on Sh150,000 cash bail each. The hearing was fixed for October 3.
