Plans under way to install camel milk dispensers in towns

A camel being milked. Camel Milk dispensers to be installed in Kenyan towns.

You will soon draw camel milk from a dispenser strategically erected along the streets and shops in major towns and cities.

And with a container of your choice, you will be able to draw enough camel milk for domestic consumption for just a few coins.

This is part of Government’s innovative and elaborate plan to put thousands of litres of camel milk that go to waste daily into good use.

The Sh65 million plan to transform the current camel milk production in the country to modern production and supply will be undertaken by Ewaso Ng’iro North River Basin Development Authority (ENNDA).

The milk stored in these dispensers will be safe and ready to drink.

“By dropping a few coins to the teller, a glass of milk ready to drink will emerge from the lower end of the dispenser,” said Kiema Mwandia, Ennda regional co-ordinator.

Milk dispensers

Incase the milk goes bad for human consumption while in the dispenser, an alert will be sent to the proprietor’s mobile phones instantly.

“An SMS will be sent to the shop manager for immediate correction. If the failures persist the machine is automatically blocked from administering the milk,” said Mwandia.

Already, Eastleigh estate, Jamia Mosque and South C estate in Nairobi are the three areas identified for erection of the milk dispensers.

This initiative comes in the wake of revelations that Kenya produces about 340 million litres of camel milk valued at Sh7.9 billion per year.

Regional Development Minister Fred Gumo said the value of camel milk in the country cannot be ignored.

“Camel milk sub-sector is now much larger than cotton and pyrethrum sub-sectors put together. And only comparable to much bigger sub-sectors such as coffee,” he said.

He said collection centres will be established in areas with largest massive camel milk production such as Garissa and Isiolo to enable farmers deposit their produce.

The minister said several transportation trucks will be purchased to ease collection and sale of the product in major cities and towns.
