The government has yet again vehemently denied reports that any Kenyan has died from hunger in the northern part of the country.
Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojode faced the wrath of MPs in Parliament as he denied the reports. Ojode told the House that there was no evidence to prove that deaths of some people in Turkana were from hunger. “Mr Speaker it is not possible for a layman to establish that a person has died from hunger,” he said.
He was responding to a ministerial statement sought by nominated MP Rachael Shebesh who wanted to know why the government had threatened to interdict two chiefs. Shebesh said the government is threatening to sack the chiefs for releasing the information yet the constitution gives Kenyans the right to information. Ojode insisted that the chief of Kalapata location had no proof of the death reports he made to a local radio station. This prompted Speaker Keneth Marende to warn Ojode that he was treading on a very slippery ground.
Marende ordered Ojode to table evidence in the House within four weeks to dispute that the deceased people did not die from hunger. He also deafened the decision to write letters to MPs saying they had misled the public since they were no experts to know the cause of death. “The work of a chief is to record deaths within a location but cannot claim to know the cause of death.
