NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jul 1 – Residents of Weru division of Nyandarua West district were on Thursday evening treated to a rare spectacle as hailstorms that hit the area left a sheet of ice.
The hailstorms hit Kasuku area leaving behind a sheet of ice covering a radius of about 2km and a depth of about six inches. The downpour also destroyed crops.
“The rain was strong but there is no death though we have been informed that a pupil at Maranatha Primary School was hit by lightning. We are yet to confirm the matter,” said area Chief Peter Kiragu.
Residents said strong winds started blowing in the area in the afternoon, followed by a heavy downpour at around 5pm only for the rare incident to occur moments later.
The chief recounted that it was only recently that a similar type of rain pounded the area where one person died after he was struck by lightning.
This is the third time the district has experienced such an occurrence in two years.
Last year, residents of Karagita and Gatimu areas were treated to a similar spectacle where heavy rains left behind a large sheet of ice that destroyed crops worth thousands of shillings
Weather experts have in the past listed destruction of the ozone layer by waste products and deforestation as key causes of such phenomena and at times, frequent dry spells in the country.
