Underprivileged children from a Kenyan school have been provided with plates to eat from thanks to the efforts of a fundraising woman from Abbots Langley.

Students from Kyambai Primary School in Kenya, were using old plastic containers and lids to hold their food, but now have aluminium plates to eat from after Esther Muoso rallied a number of Hertfordshire schools together to raise money.

Ms Muoso, of Parsonage Close, said: “The support I have had from schools including Funny Farm Nursery, Bedmond Village Primary and Francis Combe Academy has been unbelievable.

“People have donated their old school uniforms, held charity events – all to help Kyambai villagers.

“When I visited Kyambai last year, I noticed that many of the children were recycling old lids and containers to hold their food.

“One girl had only a small lid, which wouldn’t hold an adequate meal and when I asked if the children had plates I found out they didn’t.

“The containers were unhygienic, so I thought it was important that the students in the village school were provided with plates.”

Encouraged by mother-of-two Ms Muoso, Bedmond Village Primary School held a ‘table top sale’ at the beginning of January and raised about £300 to pay for the 400 aluminium plates now being used by the Kenyan students.

Ms Muoso has worked tirelessly to raise money for Kenya Charity, the organisation which aims to help provide food and clothing for children living in Kyambai, after she saw first-hand the struggle they face for basic provisions.

Ms Muoso who first started fundraising for Kyambai following the death of her firstborn, is now encouraging others to get involved.

She said: “I needed to do something positive at the time and for me this was it.

“If I could adopt all the children of Kyambai, I would. Their faces light up when they see how much people care.

“Anyone can get involved – their small contribution makes a huge difference.”
