Eliud Nyenze who died while in detention in UK in April
Little could have been done to save the life of a detainee at the Oakington detention centre, an inquest has heard.
Eliud Nyenze, a 39-year-old Kenyan, collapsed at the centre and died on April 15 this year.
Home Office pathologist Dr Nat Cary told an inquest in Huntingdon that he had not been able to find a cause of death but believed Mr Nyenze had probably suffered from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome relating to a heart problem.
Dr Cary said: “There were absolutely no injuries visible on internal or external examination.
He added: “There was absolutely nothing to suggest that Mr Nyenze had been restrained or suffered any violence before his death.”
The inquest heard that Mr Nyenze had collapsed in the early hours of April 15. He had a “thready” pulse and died from sudden cardiac arrest.
Mr Nyenze came into the country in 2002 on a visitors permit and had been working as a shopkeeper.
He was claiming asylum on the grounds that he did not want to return to Kenya, where he had family, because he had gay tendancies.
Coronor david Morris said: “He seems to have been a very nice man and in his interview seemed to be extremely truthful.”
Lawyers for Mr Nyenze’s family asked for the inquest to be adjourned on the grounds that they had not seen certain evidence including ambulance records but Mr Morris ruled out the application. He said he had not seen an earlier application but would further consider a request for an adjournment at the end of the hearing.
Mr Morris said: “I have to say, without predetermining matters, in other circumstances I would have signed it off without holding an inquest at all.”
The inquest continues.
