Suru Tanna the anti-corruption officer who was shot in Kenya
NAIROBI Oct 28 (Reuters) – A senior official at Kenya’s anti-corruption agency was shot outside his house in the capital on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
A spokesman for the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) said the reason for the attack on Suru Tanna, a member of its advisory board, was not yet known.
Tanna was in the intensive care unit at Nairobi Hospital after being shot by three men who stole a mobile phone and a jacket, police said.
The commission has cranked up a long-promised war on graft in Kenya, east Africa’s biggest economy, where corruption is endemic. The country was placed 154 out of 178 states in Transparency International’s global corruption index released on Tuesday.
“We don’t know the motive for the shooting and we don’t want to speculate. He does not have any direct input in ongoing corruption investigations and is usually briefed on such matters,” commission spokesman Nicholas Simani said.
The commission’s senior officials have security at all times and it had no plans to review security measures, he added.
Tanna is the chairman of the board of packaging company General Printers Ltd and a former chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.
The commission’s head said last week he would go after the “big fish” behind big corruption scandals, citing new powers granted by the new constitution. (Reporting by James Macharia; Editing by David Clarke and Angus MacSwan))
