Zuma Zuma in America's got talent show 2011: NBC
Kenyan acrobatic troupe Zuma Zuma, edged closer to realizing the American Dream when they advanced to the semi-finals of the sixth edition of America’s Got Talent held in Hollywood.
Fatally Unique, Team iLuminate and Melissa Villasignor joined Zuma Zuma in closing the fourth and final group of acts to progress to the semi-finals stage of a TV show that is currently one of the most watched shows in America. The performers booked their place in the next round during Wednesday night’s live results announcement episode on NBC.
Zuma Zuma’s success is being attributed in part to the huge participation of Kenyans living in the US who took part in the text-in voting process that began soon after the show ended. Thousands of Kenyans stayed up late to send text messages, phone calls, Facebook and twitter messages to their compatriots urging them to vote for the homeboys.
But this does not in anyway dampen the fact that the group is extremely talented and they could not carry their own weight. Indeed making their third appearance on the show on Tuesday evening, the Kenyan team once again received a standing ovation from the audience and favourable reviews from the judges.
Asked to comment on the team’s performance, Judge Howie Mandel said he was thrilled by Zuma Zuma’s advancement, expressing excitement and hope over what the group could possibly do next to step it up another notch in the semi-finals. “You certainly deserve it!” he said. “All I can say is, be careful!” he added.
The fourth batch of 12 acts from this season’s Top 48 performed for the judges and voting public Wednesday night as they competed for the one million dollars prize and the chance to headline a show in Las Vegas.
From Kenya with smiles, enthusiasm and a winning attitude but now operating from Hollywood and Las Vegas, the group continually brings gymnastics, jumping, juggling, balancing and contortionism into their act – delivered with the precision and speed that always leave the audience gasping for breath.
With only 90 seconds to show that they are worth a million dollars, the group jumps from one stunt to the next; barely letting the audience catch their breath. Sharing exactly what they are capable of, without a mat, the group did some stunts that are dangerous and definitely worth a show.
