Kenya sevens rugby team encountered one of their most terrifying moments on Tuesday dawn when their plane from Manchester tried to land thrice at Edinburgh Airport in vain, forcing it to re-route.
The plane, also carrying Zealand team, encountered bad weather at Edinburgh Airport where the pilot flew direct to a cross wind causing the plane to rattle and swing sideways.
It seems the London and Edinburgh Sevens legs trip appears jinxed for the team after their trip to the same events aborted in 2008.
One of the wing on their Emirate Airline plane caught fire upon take off, forcing it to land.
Dennis “Ironman” Mwanja, who was then the team’s captain said their departure was deferred for a day.
According to players, the plane circled Edinburgh Airport several times as the pilot attempted to land in vain, forcing them back to Manchester.
The plane was then re-routed to Glasgow Airport, an hour’s drive to Edinburgh.
New Zealand have already won the IRB World Sevens Series title with one leg to go this weekend at the Murrayfield.
The terrified players talked about their scary experience especially on the social site, facebook, as they thanked God for pulling them through the near-mishap.
“This was the most terrifying flight I have ever boarded. Thank you Lord for getting us safe to Edinburgh,” said Kenya’s speedster, Collins Injera on his facebook status.
Oscar Ouma described it as a near death experience. “The plane was almost subdued by the bad weather. After such an experience all one can ask for is God’s help and guidance,” said Ouma.
Andrew Amonde and William “Lomu” Ambaka said the winds were so that the pilot tried landing the plane thrice without success.
“It was some of those nasty experience you don’t want to recur but I thank God for his mercies,” said Amonde.
“What a journey to Edinburgh,” said Ambaka.
