There was drama at a funeral ceremony at the weekend at Giagatika village in Mathira district when a family of the deceased were denied the right to view the body of their sister.
The ceremony was almost turned chaotic after the family members went to collect the body of Gladwell Gathoni, 60, at Kenyatta University Mortuary in Nairobi. But they were told they could not view the body.
Gathoni’s mother Milka Ngima demanded to see her daughter’s body, but she was blocked by the widower and told to accompany the cortege to Nyeri County, 100 kilometers away, where the burial was to take place. The family claimed there was foul play from their in-laws saying that they suspected that she had been murdered.
Gathoni’s sister Ann Kanyua said the family learnt of her sister’s illness only a fortnight ago and when they went to visit her, they were told that she was not in a position to be seen by relatives.
Gathoni’s family, who had vowed to disrupt the burial ceremony unless they were allowed to view the body, were calmed down when police officers promised they would be allowed to view after the funeral mass only for her to be buried hurriedly. Maina Thiarara and Wamae Thiarara, brothers-in-law to the deceased attacked a TV cameraman at graveside.
The family of the woman vowed to go to court for an order to exhume the body for a postmortem report.
