NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 17 – A section of MPs are now planning to introduce a Motion in Parliament to disband the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) which they blame for ‘fixing’ the six suspects who face indictment by the ICC.
Belgut Member of Parliament Charles Keter accused the KNCHR of working to please foreign nations at the expense of Kenyans.
He said that the report prepared by the commission was erroneous and was largely relied upon by the International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in his investigations.
“The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights yesterday (Thursday) came out saying that those who have been named in the Ocampo list of six should step aside but I want to tell them your report was based on hearsay, you have been blamed for having coached and bribed witnesses, you have refused to even appear before CID, you should also step aside because you are using tax payers money yet there is no meaningful work you are doing apart from propaganda,” Mr Keter asserted.
The latest move comes at a time when the legislators have also filed another Motion for Kenya to pull out of the Rome Statute, which establishes the International Criminal Court.
The KNCHR report named several Kenyan leaders and politicians including the six named in the ICC list as masterminds of the post-election violence that left close to 1,500 people dead and displaced nearly half a million others.
“Ocampo based his investigations on hearsay. He went by the KNCHR report, the Waki report and we are clear that those were not reports which can pass any test so we want to tell Ocampo what he did was wrong and we will remind him forever and ever,” he said.
The ICC Prosecutor, on Wednesday named Cabinet Ministers Uhuru Kenyatta and Henry Kosgey, suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto, Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura, Former Police Commissioner Major General (Rtd) Hussein Ali and broadcaster Joshua arap Sang as the architects of the post poll chaos.
Mr Keter who was accompanied by other MPs from both PNU and ODM parties told Journalists that they hoped to table the Motion in Parliament once it returns from the Christmas break.
However, the new constitution states that such an amendment must get backing of two thirds majority of MPs before it is voted for in a referendum.
The MPs also defended the Head of Civil Service, the former Police Commissioner and broadcaster Sang and said they were not part of any political party at the time of the violence.
“Ocampo was very wrong on this list. We want justice for the post election victims, but we want justice free from political manipulation,” said legislator Adan Douale.
