Daughter of Tycoon in Robbery Charge

The daughter of a former Thika wholesaler has appeared before a Thika court charged with robbery using violence. Joyce Wambui Njirii whose father owned a wholesale store Kibuthia Stores, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Leticia Wachira.

Wambui was charged that on August 2, last year she robbed one Pius Kimeu Muasya of 430 bags of coffee with a value of Sh6 million. She was alleged to have been with other accomplices and were armed with a rifle and pangas. The coffee belonged to Kwega Coffee Estate in Thika.

Wambui faced an alternative charge that on August 7, she and her accomplices sold 71 bags of coffee stolen from Kwega Estate to Thika Coffee Mills for Sh990,697. The accused denied both charges.

Wambui was defended by Mbiyu Kamau who applied for her release on bond but the plea was rejected. The case is being prosecuted by Chief Inspector Josephine Wambua who opposed bond for the accused saying she had absconded earlier.

Kamau had submitted that the offence of robbery with violence is bailable. The case will be heard on March 3.
