Cranes fan dies on way back from Nairobi

Sandra Ssentongo who passed away on a bus from Kenya.

A Uganda Cranes fan died in a bus on her way back from watching the 2012 Nations Cup qualifier against Kenya’s Harambee Stars in Nairobi.

Whereas police records show that Sandra Ssentongo, a resident of Kasenge, Wakiso District, died at Jinja Road yesterday, her fiancé Godfrey Ssentongo says she breathed her last the moment they crossed the Busia border.

He, however, kept quiet, fearing that he would send fans in the bus into panic if he revealed that cushioned beside him was the corpse of his lover.

According to the police, Sandra could have suffered chest injuries when a bus they were travelling on Saturday morning hit a hump in Nakuru, Kenya, jerking her and in the process—colliding with another passenger.

Deputy police spokesman Vincent Ssekate said Sandra’s body had been taken to the city mortuary for a post mortem as investigations continue.

“The fans who were with Sandra noticed that she had died as they approached Wampewo roundabout at around 9:30am on Sunday. So they reported the matter at Central Police Station in Kampala,” Mr Ssekate said yesterday.

A fan, who had travelled on the same bus and spoke to Daily Monitor on condition of anonymity, said the vehicle was in a poor mechanical condition.

“We complained to Fufa officials who had hired the bus and demanded they give us another one but they did not,” said the fan.

“In fact, the first passengers refused to use it. For those who boarded later, when they were about to reach Nakuru, it failed to break as it was approaching the humps.”

Driver struggles

He added: “The driver struggled with it before hitting the humps. Three passengers got injuries. We took them to the hospital but our attention was on a man who was bleeding. The woman and her fiancé, however, did not have enough money for treatment.”

The witness said: “We mobilised Kshs6,000 (Shs150,000) but the doctors demanded Kshs8,000 (Shs200,000) for the treatment which we didn’t have.”

According to Mr Ssekate, after the treatment, the three went on to watch the match on Saturday evening. “They watched the match and boarded back home. But at Namawojolo, Mukono District, Ssentongo started complaining of pain in the lower part of the abdomen and chest,” Mr Ssekate said.

“But the fans, including her fiancé, insisted that they drive to Kampala and get treatment. She complained again at Mukono and then broke down in tears when they reached Bweyogerere, a suburb of Kampala, but the fans persisted that they reach the city first,” he said.

Efforts to talk to the Fufa travel organiser, Eng. Moses Magogo, were fruitless as his phone went unanswered several times.
