The City Council of Nairobi plans to spend Sh2.5 million on training a councillor as a pilot.
Former TV comedian-turned-city father George Mwangangi alias Mwongolo submitted the request to the Education committee on February 2, 2010.
The ODM nominated councillor will take the pilot training course (Phase 1 and 2) at the Kenya School of Flying.
“A request from councillor G. M. Mwangangi for sponsorship to undertake a professional… at a cost of Sh2,583,920,” read part of the minutes of a general purposes committee meeting that was to be held on Tuesday but was postponed.
The council offers poor students from various wards Sh5,000 education bursaries.
Councillors interviewed questioned the relevance of a pilot course to the council.
“What importance is a pilot to the council? If it were governance and sanitation that would be something else,” said councillor Stephen Kirima.
Councillors Ibrahim Dakane Rafat and Wilson Ochola said this was misuse of council funds.
“We would rather build schools, roads and solve urgent matters,” Mr Rafat said.
Mr Ochola, who described it as ‘madness’ said: “I will be in the forefront of having the proposal rejected.”
Sources say the meeting was postponed as mayor Geoffrey Majiwa was out of town.
