Ms. Salome Muringa who was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer shortly after arriving from Kenya
By Antony Karanja
For one Kenyan woman in Everett, WA; her visit to see her daughter in the US could not have made a more dreadful turn.
Ms. Salome Muringa came to the US five months ago seeking to spend sometime with her daughter Caroline Nyagaki and her family.
Shortly thereafter, she started feeling unwell and was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer which culminated with an abdominal surgery on May 28, 2010.
Since then, she has been bedridden in Everett, WA unable to walk or to perform the simple everyday tasks. She has accrued thousands of dollars in medical bills on top of the daily monetary requirements for medicine and medical supplies. She’s a mother, our parents’ peer, and a fellow Kenyan.
Ms Muringa who came to the US in good health is now not able to walk unsupported, while being away from the rest of her family and support system in Kenya. This has been her story since the surgical operation.
Friends and Family have launched an effort to passionately and humbly appeal to the larger Kenyan community in the US and elsewhere in the Diaspora to financially stand in the gap in the spirit of collectivism (harambee); the building block of our identity as Kenyans.
A fundraiser towards her medical bills, medical supplies and daily sustenance has been scheduled for Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 4 pm at the All Saints Lutheran Church, 27225 Military Rd. S Auburn , WA 98001 .
A Bank of America Account # 44953164 (under the name-Carol Nyagaki) has been set up for the convenience of those that may not be able to attend. (If making deposits from out of state, please make sure to mention it is a Washington State account)
